UNWOMEN Under-Secretary-General Berrak GÜNÇE Academic Assistant Ela Zehra YILMAZ Agenda Item Agenda Item: Combating Drug-Facilitated Sexual Exploitation within Domestic and Social Environments Study Guide Rules of Procedure About the Committee UNWOMEN, known as the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women, is an organization within the United Nations focused on achieving worldwide gender equality. The UNWOMEN committee works together with member states to enhance the pace of women's empowerment. It aims to eliminate the numerous issues that women face because of their gender including economic discrimination, violence based on gender, insufficient political representation, and social exclusion. The committee moves forward with the aim of attaining gender equality, believing it to be a fundamental human right crucial for achieving worldwide sustainable prosperity. It also offers gender-inclusive programs and initiatives to ensure that girls can participate and actively compete under the same conditions as men. In the battle against sexual violence and exploitation, drug-facilitated sexual abuse remains a troubling concern in both personal and public environments. This violent act condemns an offender for drugging an individual or individuals in order to degrade them to some extent and to exploit them sexually. In a domestic environment, it typically occurs within a close relationship, whereas in a social environment, it happens at gatherings or nightclubs, where individuals can be approached. This must be dealt with simultaneously through a multi-faceted strategy that includes improved legal frameworks, education and prevention of abuse within the community, and the provision of increasing support for victims. This agenda topic must tackle the challenges and propose solutions to avert drug-facilitated sexual abuse and advance justice for survivors from both domestic and community social settings. EXECUTIVE BOARD #witnessthehistory Letter from the IUMUN Club President Dear Club Members and Fellow MUN Society Members, I couldn’t be more honoured to serve as the president of Istanbul University Model United Nations Club. As the last remaining board member of the founder era, it is both bittersweet and exciting for me to assume the position of president, for I have witnessed its history, and am now ready to shape its future. Since its founding, IUMUN has been the leading conference in İstanbul and a prime example of what the youth is capable of when they put their heart and soul into something. When they have a clear vision, and the drive to execute that vision. IUMUN is a shining beacon that sets an example for what could be. As IUMUN community, we try to raise awareness and bring attention to pressing issues of our time. Open up new perspectives and broaden our horizons. The IUMUN spirit that binds us all together dictates that we must have passion, and compassion when tackling difficult issues of our time. It is our duty and our mission to work as hard as we can to better our futures. But why do we work so hard? Even though humanity has come a long way, war and conflicts persist, wealth inequality rises every year, populism is on the rise, global institutions seem to fail us and flowers are blooming in Antarctica. At times like these where the future seems bleak, it is easy to fall into despair. But we must remember that humans are political animals. We fight for rights we might not get to enjoy. We fight for a better future we might not even get to experience. To fall into apathy and not participate in the shaping of our future would be a betrayal of our humanity itself. We only achieve our full potential and taste the fruits of the full human experience, if we involve ourselves with politics. We fight because we simply must. The United Nations might not be perfect, but it represents something that is deeply human: the desire to come together and solve our problems peacefully. It represents the effort we put in. And that is why, we work so hard. To imitate humanity's hope for peace and cherish its stubbornness in the face of hopelessness. My name is Öykü Taş, and I have had the honor of being a part of IUMUN since 2022. In the past years, I have worked as an Academic Assistant, Under-Secretary-General, and now, with great appreciation, as your Secretary-General. Being part of this conference has been one of the most life-transforming experiences for me. It helped me grow as a leader, collaborator, and person, and I am deeply honored to now carry forward the legacy of those before me and the extraordinary contributions each individual has made to IUMUN's journey. IUMUN has always been more than just a conference; it is a community, a platform, and a tradition for excellence that inspires growth, understanding, and connection. Every year, it gathers the brightest of minds from all corners of the MUN Societies from Türkiye and Worldwide to come together and discuss matters that reflect the complexities in our global society. What IUMUN represents not just a commitment to diplomacy and innovation but also a celebration of passion, creativity, and determination that young leaders bring to the table. We are proud to carry on this tradition in an experience that will be enriching for all our participants. In our diverse committees, delegates will battle with pressing issues in the world today, work toward meaningful solutions, and engage each other in debates that will challenge and inspire. For besides the academic discipline involved, you will also find an arena where lifelong friendships can be forged, new viewpoints gained, and limits of potential tested. For me, IUMUN has been a labor of love—a reflection of my unyielding belief in the power of the youth to create a better tomorrow. It is my hope that you will experience at least a tiny part of this sense of community, growth, and purpose as well while being here for the conference.
