Agenda Item

Agenda Item: Syrian Question: Prevention of Probable Recurring Migrant Crises

About the Committee

Syria, together with modern-day Iraq, is the country in ancient Mesopotamia where the first recorded human civilization in written history emerged, which has witnessed countless different civilizations, states, and regimes for 5000 years since the Assyrian period, from which it takes its name, and these vibrant administrative conflicts and changes have accelerated with an unprecedented intensity in the last 15 years and have turned into a civil war with the definition of today's modern terminology and have caused serious forced migrations as in the past examples and have deeply affected the surrounding countries, especially Turkia.

The country's ethnic, religious, and sectarian diversity, class segregation, geographical location, and the power relations between these social and economic elements seriously hinder the political stability of the country, make it difficult to predict its fate, and cannot assure that new waves of migration will not occur.

In late 2024, with the collapse of the Baathist Assad regime, which was the only officially recognized sovereign central government in the area, public opinion was unanimous that the region would finally stabilize, but it is not unlikely that the issue will once again reach an impasse due to areas groundless feature and disposition for a possible democratic regime.
