Agenda Item A: Legal and Criminal Strategies in Combating Fentanyl Addiction
About the Committee

The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) is an international agency that provides assistance for police forces to combat international crimes and crime syndicates. INTERPOL provides intelligence sharing, operational support and resources to combat global threats including illegal drug trade and production with the active participation of its 195 member countries.
The spread of fentanyl accelerated with the incorrect prescribing and the aggressive marketing strategies of pharmaceutical firms. This issue has its roots in the late 20th century when the American healthcare system commonly prescribed drugs containing opioids –a highly addictive active ingredient with effects similar to morphine– even for simple pain, resulting in many people becoming addicted to them. The main reason behind this spread was its accessibility through illegal ways, especially as drug cartels found it more profitable and easier to market, since its production was cheaper than other substances like heroin.
Our main objective in this committee is to investigate the resources of opioid production, trafficking and usage; and eventually trying to find a solution for this global health-threatening spread.
